FDA Approves New System for Automated Cord Blood Processing

The FDA approved the use of the AXP II System to automatically process cord blood units at the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank.

On August 14, 2026, the FDA approved the Carolinas Cord Blood Bank at Duke University School of Medicine to use the AXP II System for automated processing of cord blood units. The AXP II System is a machine that processes donated umbilical cord blood so that the stem cell part can be separated and stored. The system is used for cord blood for hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) therapy, which is a medical treatment that uses the stem cells to repair a patient’s bone marrow or immune system. The FDA also approved updated labeling associated with the system.

My Perspective: I found this interesting because it shows how technology can improve the way cord blood is processed and prepared for medical use, making it more accessible and easier for patients. It also shows the other side of all the legal work that goes into this. As research and technology continue to advance, processing of the stem cells makes these treatments more efficient and accessible to patients who need them, and researchers, which can help advance what its possibilities are.
